Objective: To analyze the findings related to rubber band ligation versus sclerobanding in patients presenting with second degree hemorrhoids.
Methodology: Quasi experimental study was conducted at surgery Department, Combined Military Hospital Multan from April 2024 to March 2025. A total of 260 patients belonging to both genders with second degree hemorrhoids were divided into two groups of 130 patients each. Patients in Group A underwent rubber band ligation while patients in Group received sclerobanding. The operative time was documented in both groups. Patients were followed up at 2, 4 and 8 weeks intervals for resolution of symptoms and any complications. SPSS version 25 was employed for data analysis, and a p-value below 0.05 was regarded as indicative of statistical significance.
Results: The average age of participants in the study was 43.6 ± 11.4 years. The mean duration of surgery in the RBL group was 5.9 ± 2.0 minutes, compared to 9.4 ± 2.2 minutes in the sclerobanding group a difference that was statistically significant (p < 0.001). At 8 weeks follow up, complete resolution of symptoms was reported in 110 patients in Group A (84.6%) versus 121 patients (93.1%) in Group B. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.030). At the 8-week follow-up, recurrence was observed in 7.7% of patients (10 individuals) in Group A, compared to 2.3% (3 individuals) in Group B—a difference that reached statistical significance (p = 0.046).
Conclusion: Sclerobanding was found to be better than rubber band ligation alone in patients presenting with second degree hemorrhoids.
